Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT is a type of therapy that supports you to understand how your emotions influence your thoughts and behaviours. When using this therapeutic approach, we work with you to explore your emotional patterns and how they are impacting both yourself and others.

EFT is based on the idea that our emotions provide us with important information about our underlying needs. This means that when we learn to process and validate our feelings we will be aligning ourselves with what really matters to us. So when we are living in a way that denies our basic underlying psychological needs (such as for security, belonging, respect, trust, autonomy or meaning) then we often experience unhealthy emotional patterns, such as depressive or anxiety disorders.

EFT is fundamentally a process of enhancing emotional intelligence. You will learn that the emotions and feelings you see as irrational and problematic are actually rational and helpful. You will learn that when you avoid certain feelings and emotions you are depriving yourself of their adaptive potential. In this way you will understand how to let your emotions guide your choices in life and your relationships will be the better for it.
